We Do It For Lou

Iron Phi got its name when it was started in 2010 by combining both Famous Phi, Lou Gehrig's nickname the "Iron Horse" with Phi Delta Theta, giving Iron Phi! The proceeds of this great philanthropy go to the ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Assosiation to fund screenings and research to find a cure for ALS, a specific disease that causes the death of neurons which control voluntary muscles. ALS is characterized by stiff muscles, muscle twitching, and gradually worsening weakness due to muscles decreasing in size. This results in difficulty in speaking, swallowing, and eventually breathing causing death with those diagnosed.

Since 2013, Phi Delta Theta Washinton Epsilon has raised nearly $50,000 for Iron Phi! Last year we raised nearly $13,000 and this year we are already about to be an Iron Phi Chapter ($10,000 in one year) for the second time in a row! 

In addition to raising money for ALSA/PDTF, each chapter is required to participate in an athletic event that puts their body to the test that others put their heart to when donating. We here at Washington Epsilon take The Iron Horse Challenge every spring. We take off on a 3 day exphedition from our Chapter House in Cheney Wa, and run every mile for 170 miles to the Iron Horse Monument overlooking the Columbia River Gorge.
